Are you looking for something different to tingle and tantalize your taste buds, exotic and spicy foods that scream flavour? You have to check out the new India 47 Restaurant & Bar at Lesperance and E.C. Row, in the former Webb’s or Rygate. I don’t know a heck of a lot about authentic Indian food, only having been to a couple other restaurants serving that particular country’s fare, but this new venture caught my attention.
With the whole world in chaos, this restaurant couldn’t have picked a worse time to open their doors for business. But judging by the booming take-out business they have going on right now, they must know something that other restaurateurs don’t. Maybe fresh food spiced with flavours most of use have never experienced is just the ticket.
The menu is colorful and expansive with menu items that have strange names that beg to be pronounced properly. Of course there are those that even I have heard of, like Chana Masala, Samosas, and Butter Chicken. What impressed me the most was the flavourful sauces and dips and that you can order wimpy, medium or hot.
The Chala Masala was good but didn’t rock my boat – it’s only chickpeas for god sake. The samosas weren’t the best we’ve ever had, but they took on a whole new personality when I dipped them in the brown smokey sauce. There were also a green cilantro a white cucumber dips.
The Delhi butter chicken had generous portions of tender chicken in a spiced and creamy tomato sauce. We also ordered the Chicken Saag, which was sauteed in spinach and mixed greens, cooked in a medley of spices. Both entrees had enough sauce to soak up with the Garlic Naan Bread. I don’t eat much bread these days but I couldn’t get their naan down my cakehold fast enough.
Personally, I found the variety of spices and flavour amazing, with just enough of a zing to get my attention, but not enough to burn my wimpy mouth. If and when Covid 19 ever dies out, this restaurant will undoubtedly be packed. If you’re ordering take out, call early. Cathryn and I both give India 47 an 8 out of 10.
