Heart of the Beast

Cathryn chose not to see this one so I went alone (she was afraid to cry), wanting to see what looked like awesome cinematography, on the big screen. I wasn’t disappointed since the movie was shot on location in parts of Alaska that have never been filmed before. (turns out I was misinformed…it was actually filmed in New Zealand). Think cold, rugged and desolate and you’ll get the picture. Brad Pitt must have froze his ass off making this flick.

Pitt is really a supporting actor, second to his dog, called Oden. They are both war veterans with wounds and nightmares and PTSD. The furry ex-warrior even has a prosthetic leg. The retired special forces soldier has his own scars and apparently, a bad heart that causes a plain crash.

The story is of survival, with Sgt. Major James Belmont (Pitt) and Oden fighting the forces of nature on their last mission. The trail is hazardous with bears and wolves and dangerous rivers that have to be crossed. The former warriors have to depend on each other for their ultimate survival.

The movie was intense but I was a bit surprised by the ending. Pitt did an amazing acting job in this one and if there film awards for canines, Boden will win hands down.

I think the movie was very good but not great. I give it a 9 out of 10.
